There is a moment in Challenge Wanaka, about forty kilometres into the bike, when you crest a rise on the Crown Range Road and the Southern Alps reveal themselves in their entirety — a wall of snow-capped peaks stretching from horizon to horizon, their reflections shimmering in the lakes below, the scale so enormous that your mind cannot process it while simultaneously trying to hold a threshold effort.
