The Story
Anhui province sits in eastern China, and its capital Hefei is a city of nine million people that most Western triathletes have never heard of. Challenge Anhui brings half-distance triathlon to a country where the sport is growing from almost nothing — and where the infrastructure, the scale, and the ambition are unmistakably Chinese.
The lake swim is freshwater, 16°C, and in a purpose-built venue that reflects China's approach to sport infrastructure: new, clean, and built to accommodate thousands. The bike crosses the flat Anhui countryside — 300m of total elevation through rice paddies and farmland on roads that are often brand-new. The run loops through the race precinct, where the Chinese approach to event production creates a finish-line experience with screens, music, and spectacle.
The Chinese triathlon community is young and enthusiastic. Many athletes at Challenge Anhui are completing their first half-distance, and the energy at the finish line reflects that — every finish is genuinely celebrated because for many, it's genuinely new.
Challenge Anhui is part of triathlon's expansion into Asia's largest market. The course is flat, the logistics are impressive, and the significance of the race extends beyond sport into China's evolving relationship with endurance athletics.
"Nine million people in Hefei, and triathlon is brand new here. The enthusiasm of first-timers is infectious."
"Chinese race organisation is thorough. The infrastructure is new and the production is polished. You feel like a professional athlete regardless of your pace."

💡 Insider Tips
- → Visa requirements for China change frequently. Check well in advance and allow extra processing time.
- → The flat bike is a power course. Aero position and sustained wattage determine results.
- → Chinese food is the best pre-race and post-race nutrition available — but stick to cooked dishes if your stomach isn't acclimatised.
- → Learn a few Mandarin phrases. 'Jiāyóu' (加油, meaning 'go for it!') is what the crowd will shout at you.
