The Story
Dublin City Triathlon takes place in the kind of conditions that the Irish have been perfecting their relationship with for centuries: unpredictable, frequently damp, and compensated for by the warmest crowd you'll ever race in front of.
The swim is in Dublin Bay — a broad, sheltered body of water between Dún Laoghaire and Howth Head. At 13°C, the water is bracing by any standard, Atlantic-cold and dark, with a visibility measured in centimetres rather than metres. It's Irish water — character-building, the locals call it.
The bike course rolls along Dublin's coastal road and through the city's southern suburbs. It's flat by Irish standards — which means rolling by anyone else's. The roads pass through Sandymount, Booterstown, and along the DART rail line, with Dublin Bay visible for much of the ride. The surface is typical urban Irish: functional, occasionally patchy, with drain covers to dodge.
The run loops through the Phoenix Park area and along the Liffey quays, past Georgian townhouses and the occasional pub where the early-morning regulars raise pints in salute. The crowd is everything you'd hope from Dublin: warm, loud, personal, and deeply familiar with the concept of enduring something difficult and celebrating afterwards.
The Dublin Triathlon doesn't have the prestige of a World Triathlon event or the scale of London. What it has is the unshakeable Irish conviction that sport is better when it's followed by a pint, that rain is just weather, and that showing up is the hardest part.
"The bay was 13 degrees and the rain was horizontal. Best race I've ever done. That's Dublin."
"The Irish crowd turns every aid station into a party. You can't feel sorry for yourself when people are that happy to see you."
What It Feels Like
Dublin City Triathlon is a no-frills, character-rich city race. Cold water, variable weather, warm crowd. The course won't set records — it'll create memories. Ideal for athletes who value atmosphere over altitude and craic over course records.
🏊 The Swim
1,500m in Dublin Bay at 13°C. Atlantic-cold, dark, character-building water. The bay is sheltered from ocean swell but the temperature is unforgiving. Wetsuit is essential. The swim is honest — no current to help or hinder, just cold water and distance.
🚴 The Bike
40km of flat-to-rolling coastal and suburban roads. Dublin's roads are functional rather than pristine — watch for drain covers and surface changes. The route along Dublin Bay offers views of Howth Head and the Wicklow Mountains. Wind off the bay is the main challenge on the exposed sections.
🏃 The Run
10km through Dublin's streets and parkland. Flat, well-supported, with the kind of crowd energy that only Irish people can generate. Georgian architecture, Liffey views, and pubs where regulars cheer from the doorway.
Legendary Moments
The First Dublin City Triathlon
Dublin's first dedicated city triathlon launches, giving Irish athletes a major-city race to add to the growing national triathlon calendar. The bay swim immediately becomes the race's defining feature.
Post-Pandemic Return
The race returns after the COVID-19 hiatus to record entries. The Irish triathlon community proves it was only getting stronger during the break.
💡 Insider Tips
- → Dublin Bay at 13°C is serious cold water. If you're not accustomed to Atlantic temperatures, practice in cold water for weeks before the race. Neoprene accessories (cap, gloves, booties) are worth the investment.
- → Irish weather is legendarily unpredictable. Layer your transition kit and pack a clear-lens cycling glasses option. Rain can appear from nowhere — and disappear just as fast.
- → The post-race scene is part of the race. Plan to stay — the Dublin triathlon community is social and welcoming, and the recovery pub session is as important as the warm-down.
