The Story

Leeds sits in the heart of Yorkshire, England's largest county and a place where grit is not just a quality but a geological fact. The World Triathlon Series came to Leeds in 2016, and the city immediately proved that British triathlon crowds are the most passionately loud on the international circuit.

Roundhay Park, in north Leeds, provides the venue — a sprawling Victorian park with a lake, woods, and rolling terrain that feels a thousand miles from the flat city-centre courses that dominate the World Triathlon circuit. The swim takes place in Waterloo Lake, a body of water whose 14°C temperature in June is a polite Yorkshire way of telling you this won't be easy.

The bike course is where Leeds separates itself from every other WTS venue. Rolling roads through the park and surrounding streets, with punchy climbs that shatter the peloton in draft-legal racing and test legs in age-group events. Three hundred metres of climbing across 40km doesn't sound like much until you're on Yorkshire's short, sharp rises with fresh-from-the-lake legs.

The run is flat by comparison, but by then the damage is done. The run course loops through the park with crowd-lined sections that funnel noise at you like a stadium. Yorkshire people take sport seriously — they understand the difference between a good performance and a great one, and they respond to effort with genuine, full-throated appreciation.

Leeds proved that World Triathlon racing doesn't need warm water or flat roads to be great. It needs a course with character and a crowd that cares. Yorkshire delivers both.

"The Leeds crowd is something else. They understand suffering — it's a Yorkshire thing — and they reward it."

Alistair Brownlee — Olympic champion, racing in his home county

"I've raced World Triathlon Series on every continent. Leeds has the best crowd. No question."

Katie Zaferes — World champion, after WTS Leeds

What It Feels Like

A World Triathlon venue with genuine course character. The cold swim, rolling bike, and passionate crowd make Leeds a race that tests more than fitness — it tests resilience. If you want to experience what British triathlon atmosphere feels like at its peak, this is the race.

🏊 The Swim

1,500m in Waterloo Lake, Roundhay Park. The water is cold — 14°C — and murky. A Yorkshire lake in June. Wetsuit is mandatory for most. The enclosed lake means no current, but the cold water demands acclimatisation. A strong first 200m in cold water sets the tone for the race.

🚴 The Bike

40km of rolling roads through Roundhay Park and north Leeds. 300m of climbing with punchy rises that break rhythm. In draft-legal racing, the hills split the peloton and create selection. For age-groupers, it's an honest test of bike fitness — the climbs are short but steep, and they accumulate.

🏃 The Run

10km through the park on relatively flat terrain. After the rolling bike, the flat run feels like mercy. Crowd-lined sections create a corridor of noise that lifts even the most depleted athletes. The Leeds crowd is arguably the best in world triathlon.
