The Story
Challenge Miami is the flattest half-distance on the calendar. Zero metres of climbing. Not approximately zero — actually, mathematically, geologically zero. South Florida is a limestone shelf barely above sea level, and the bike course doesn't deviate from that geological fact.
The swim in Biscayne Bay is warm (20°C in March), sheltered, and salty — tropical water in a protected bay. The bike follows the flat South Florida roads through the Homestead area: straight, flat, and exposed to whatever wind the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico are generating. The run traces a flat waterfront course with Miami's skyline shimmering in the distance.
What makes Challenge Miami distinctive isn't the terrain — it's the elimination of terrain. No hills means pure power output. No recovery descents. No climbing gears. Just 90km of sustained effort on roads as flat as a table. It's harder than it sounds, because flat courses offer nowhere to soft-pedal, nowhere to stretch, and nowhere to hide from your own fitness.
Miami's Latin American energy, subtropical climate, and flat-fast course make this the speed 70.3 of the Americas — a race where PBs are set and the post-race celebration has a distinctly Miami flavour.
"Zero elevation gain. You'd think it would be easy. It is not easy. It's just flat."
"The Miami finish line has more salsa music than any other triathlon I've done. The Cuban coffee at the aid station was unexpected."
What It Feels Like
Challenge Miami is a physics experiment: remove all elevation, add wind and warmth, and see what pure power output produces. It's the flattest half-distance in the world.
🏊 The Swim
Biscayne Bay: warm (20°C), protected, shallow. The bay's calm conditions make this one of the easiest swims on the half-distance calendar.
🚴 The Bike
Dead flat. Zero metres of climbing across 90km of South Florida roads. The flatness is the challenge — no descents to recover, no climbing to break the effort. It's a sustained power test where wind is the only variable. The roads are wide and straight.
🏃 The Run
Flat waterfront running in subtropical warmth. Miami's skyline provides the visual interest that the terrain does not. The heat can be a factor in March.

💡 Insider Tips
- → Flat courses demand sustained power. Train for 90 minutes at race effort with no recovery breaks — no hills, no descents, no coast.
- → Aero position is everything on a flat, fast course. Get a proper bike fit and practice staying in the bars.
- → The March warmth can surprise. Heat management matters even though the course feels easy on paper.
- → Extend your trip for South Beach, Little Havana, and the best Cuban food outside of Cuba.
