The Story

Chicago has been hosting triathlon since 1983, which makes the Chicago Triathlon one of the oldest continuously run triathlons in the world. It is also, year after year, one of the largest — with fields exceeding 9,000 athletes across the race weekend.

The swim in Lake Michigan is the race's soul. You wade into the freshwater expanse of America's third-largest lake with the Chicago skyline behind you — the Willis Tower, the Hancock Center, the entire architectural legacy of the city rising from the lakeshore like a wall of glass and steel. The water is fresh, clean, and around 20°C in August — cool enough for wetsuits, warm enough to enjoy. Lake Michigan doesn't have currents, but it has wind-driven chop that can turn a calm morning into a washing machine by mid-race.

The bike course runs along Lake Shore Drive — the iconic boulevard that separates Chicago from its lakefront — on closed roads. It is flat, fast, and exposed to the wind that gives Chicago its nickname. The Windy City earns it: lakefront gusts can exceed 30 km/h, and the exposed course offers no shelter. What it does offer is a view — the skyline on one side, the infinite blue of Lake Michigan on the other.

The run finishes what the wind started. A flat, fast course through Grant Park and along the lakefront, with the Buckingham Fountain and the Field Museum as backdrop. The crowd support is Midwestern-generous: enthusiastic, personal, and constant.

Chicago Triathlon endures because it delivers what the city itself delivers: scale, honesty, and the kind of no-nonsense quality that doesn't need to announce itself. It's a flat, fast course in a beautiful, wind-swept city, and it has been welcoming athletes since before most triathlons existed.

"Lake Michigan at sunrise with the skyline behind you — it's the most beautiful swim start in American triathlon."

Chicago age-group regular — Pre-race, Chicago Triathlon

"The wind on Lake Shore Drive is the hidden competitor. You don't see it on the course map, but you'll feel it for 40 kilometres."

What It Feels Like

A flat, fast, wind-exposed course in one of America's great cities. Chicago Triathlon is ideal for first-timers (the course is forgiving), PB-hunters (the flat profile rewards fitness), and anyone who wants to race in a world-class urban setting. The wind is the equaliser — respect it and you'll have a great day.

🏊 The Swim

1,500m in Lake Michigan. Freshwater, no current, and around 20°C. The lake can be glass-calm or wind-chopped; conditions change in minutes. The swim start on the beach with the skyline behind you is one of the most photogenic in triathlon. Sight the buoys carefully — without current, any off-course swimming is wasted effort.

🚴 The Bike

40km on flat, closed Lake Shore Drive. The course is fast and the surface is good. Wind is the variable — Chicago's lakefront is exposed, and headwinds or crosswinds can add minutes to your bike split. Ride steady power regardless of wind direction. The skyline views are spectacular but keep your eyes on the road.

🏃 The Run

10km through Grant Park and along the lakefront. Flat, well-supported, with the Chicago skyline as a constant companion. The Buckingham Fountain marks the turnaround. Crowd support is thick and genuine — Chicagoans know how to cheer.
