Racing as Travel
Some races justify the plane ticket. The course is spectacular, the location is a holiday destination, and the event itself becomes the trip. These are the triathlons worth building a vacation around.
Europe
Ironman Lanzarote, Spain 🌋
The toughest Ironman. Volcanic lava fields, 2500m of bike climbing, Atlantic trade winds, and an atmosphere that feels like racing on another planet. The bike through Timanfaya National Park is arguably the most dramatic course in triathlon.
Best for: Experienced Ironman athletes who want the ultimate test Trip tip: Arrive a week early. Lanzarote is a fantastic base for pre-race training — ride the race course, swim at Playa Grande, and visit the César Manrique art installations.
Ironman Nice, France 🏔️
Mediterranean swim, Alpine bike course through the hinterlands above the Côte d’Azur, and a stunning coastal run along the Promenade des Anglais. Nice is also the host of the Ironman World Championship (rotating with Kona).
Best for: Athletes who want world-class competition in a world-class city Trip tip: Extend your stay for the food. Nice’s old town has some of the best restaurants on the Riviera.
Challenge Roth, Germany 🎉
Not technically an Ironman — it’s a Challenge race — but many consider it the best full-distance triathlon in the world. 300,000+ spectators line the course, creating a wall of noise that carries you through the marathon. The “Solarer Berg” bike climb has more atmosphere than most football stadiums.
Best for: Anyone doing their first or their fastest full-distance race Trip tip: Roth is a small town in Bavaria. Book accommodation early — it sells out faster than the race entries.
Americas
Ironman Cozumel, Mexico 🏝️
Crystal-clear Caribbean water, a pancake-flat bike course, and warm temperatures. Cozumel is one of the fastest Ironman courses in the world and a popular Kona qualifying race. The swim in the turquoise waters off the island is worth the entry fee alone.
Best for: Athletes targeting a PB or Kona slot Trip tip: Combine with a week in the Riviera Maya. Playa del Carmen and Tulum are a short ferry ride away.
Escape from Alcatraz, San Francisco 🌁
Swim from Alcatraz Island to shore through the San Francisco Bay, bike through the Presidio, and run along the coast and through sand. It’s one of the most unique race formats in triathlon — no timing chips on the swim, staggered water start, and strong currents that demand respect.
Best for: Experienced triathletes who want something unforgettable Trip tip: San Francisco in June is jacket weather. Pack layers. The post-race scene at Crissy Field is fantastic.
Oceania
Ironman New Zealand 🗻
Swim in Lake Taupo (volcanic crater lake), bike through the Waikato countryside, and run along the lakefront with views of snow-capped mountains. Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful Ironman courses.
Best for: Athletes who want stunning scenery and a well-organized race Trip tip: Add a week for Rotorua (geothermal wonders) and Tongariro Alpine Crossing (one of the world’s best day hikes).
Challenge Wanaka, New Zealand 🏔️
Full distance triathlon in Wanaka, one of New Zealand’s most beautiful lake towns. Lake swim with mountain reflections, a bike course through the Crown Range (the highest sealed road in NZ), and a run along the lake. Extreme but unforgettable.
Best for: The once-in-a-lifetime race experience Trip tip: February is peak summer in NZ. Combine with Queenstown adventure activities.
Africa
Ironman South Africa 🌊
Based in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), with a warm Indian Ocean swim, rolling coastal bike, and a run through the city. One of the most affordable Ironman races with a passionate local triathlon community.
Best for: Ironman on a budget with great weather Trip tip: Add a safari in Addo Elephant National Park (1 hour from the race venue) and a trip to the Garden Route.
Asia
Ironman Japan 🗾
Based in Hokkaido, with a lake swim, rolling bike through Japanese countryside, and a run through charming rural towns. Japanese race organization is immaculate — every aid station is a work of art.
Best for: Athletes who want a cultural experience wrapped around a race Trip tip: Combine with Tokyo, Kyoto, and Japanese hot springs (onsen) for the ultimate recovery.
How to Plan a Race-cation
- Book the race first. Popular races sell out fast — Roth in minutes, Lanzarote in hours.
- Arrive early. 4–7 days for jet lag recovery and course familiarization.
- Ship your bike or rent locally. BikeFlights, TriBike Transport, or local tri shops.
- Build in post-race days. You won’t want to fly the day after an Ironman. Plan 2–3 recovery days.
- Involve your family. Choose destinations with activities for non-racing partners and kids.
