The Story

Gran Canaria is the 'continent in miniature' — an island with beaches, mountains, desert, and forest all within an hour's drive. Challenge Gran Canaria takes the mountain part seriously: 900m of climbing on the bike course makes this the hilliest Challenge half-distance on the Canary Islands.

The Atlantic swim off Mogán on the southwest coast is warm and sheltered — the south side of Gran Canaria is protected from the trade winds that batter the north. The bike heads inland and upward, climbing through banana plantations, barrancos (volcanic ravines), and the winding mountain roads that connect the coastal resorts to the island's volcanic interior. The climbing is sustained and scenic — hairpin bends through volcanic rock with views back to the Atlantic.

The run returns to the coast, where the resort town atmosphere provides a flat, spectator-friendly finish. Gran Canaria's year-round tourist infrastructure means good hotels, good restaurants, and easy logistics.

This is the climbing Challenge on the Canary Islands — where Fuerteventura tests you with wind, Gran Canaria tests you with elevation.

"Gran Canaria doesn't blow you off the bike — it makes you climb until you wish it had."

Spanish age-grouper — Challenge Gran Canaria 2023

"The hairpin bends up from the coast have the best views in Canary Island triathlon. If you can look up from your stem."

International competitor — Post-race report

What It Feels Like

Challenge Gran Canaria is the climbing half-distance of the Canary Islands. The 900m of bike elevation makes this a race for cyclists, wrapped in volcanic island beauty.

🏊 The Swim

Atlantic off Mogán: warm (20°C), sheltered on the south coast, clear volcanic water. The protected southern coastline reduces the Atlantic swell to manageable levels.

🚴 The Bike

The mountain course: 900m of climbing through Gran Canaria's volcanic interior. Sustained climbs of 5-15 minutes at 4-7% through barrancos and mountain villages. The scenery is dramatic — volcanic rock, banana plantations, hairpin bends with Atlantic panoramas. This is a genuine climbing course that rewards power-to-weight.

🏃 The Run

Coastal resort town run: flat, warm, tourist infrastructure providing spectator access and aid station logistics.
