The Story
Bermuda is a 21-square-mile island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, population 64,000, and it produces Olympic triathlon champions. That fact alone should tell you something about the island's relationship with the sport.
The World Triathlon Series came to Hamilton, Bermuda in 2018, partly because Flora Duffy — the island's dominant triathlete and future Olympic champion — deserved a home race, and partly because Bermuda offered something no other WTS venue could: a genuinely hilly bike course on a subtropical island with turquoise water and pink-sand beaches.
The swim takes place in Hamilton Harbour, 1,500m of ocean swimming at 20°C with the pastel-coloured buildings of Front Street visible from every stroke. The water is Atlantic-clear, the conditions are typically calm, and the setting is postcard-perfect.
The bike course is where Bermuda bares its teeth. Four hundred metres of climbing in 40km doesn't sound devastating until you ride Bermuda's short, steep hills — punchy ascents on narrow roads that shatter the peloton in elite racing and test every age-grouper's resolve. The island's roads wind through cedar groves, past limestone cottages with white roofs, and along clifftop sections with views that would be distracting if you weren't breathing so hard.
The run winds through Hamilton's compact streets, rolling and exposed to the subtropical sun. The entire island comes out to watch — and on an island this small, that means everyone. WTS Bermuda is triathlon as a national event, with a crowd that treats every athlete like a local hero.
"Racing at home in Bermuda, with the whole island watching — there's no pressure like it. And no support like it either."
"The hills here are vicious. Short, steep, repeated. By the third lap you're just trying to stay on the bike."
What It Feels Like
WTS Bermuda is a race of rare character. The hilly bike, clear-water swim, and intimate island atmosphere create an experience unlike any other WTS venue. It rewards climbers, heat-adapted athletes, and anyone who appreciates racing in one of the most beautiful settings in world triathlon.
🏊 The Swim
1,500m in Hamilton Harbour — clear Atlantic water at 20°C, sheltered and typically calm. The turquoise water and pastel-fronted buildings of Hamilton make this one of the most visually stunning swim starts on the WTS circuit. Sighting is easy with the city's waterfront as your reference.
🚴 The Bike
40km with 400m of climbing on Bermuda's narrow, rolling roads. The hills are short but steep — punchy ascents that break your rhythm and test your climbing power. The descents are technical on narrow roads. Cedar-lined lanes and clifftop views are the reward for the effort. In draft-legal racing, the hills create natural selection.
🏃 The Run
10km through Hamilton's streets. Rolling terrain with some short climbs that feel significant after the hilly bike. The subtropical sun is the hidden variable — heat management matters. The crowd is personal and passionate — on an island of 64,000, every athlete gets noticed.
Legendary Moments
Flora Duffy Races at Home
The World Triathlon Series comes to Bermuda for the first time. Flora Duffy, the island's most decorated athlete, races in front of her home crowd. The entire island turns out. Bermuda becomes a triathlon destination.
Olympic Gold for Bermuda
Flora Duffy wins Olympic gold in Tokyo. She is Bermuda's first Olympic champion. The island celebrates. The WTS Bermuda event that follows carries the weight of national pride.
💡 Insider Tips
- → The hills demand a compact crankset with a 28T or 30T rear cassette. Bermuda's climbs are short but steep — you need gearing to spin rather than grind. Test your setup before race day.
- → Subtropical sun at race time means serious heat exposure. Start hydrating aggressively the day before. Ice in your tri suit and on your neck at aid stations is not overkill — it's essential.
- → Bermuda is a small island with limited accommodation. Book early and stay close to Hamilton. The island is only 21 square miles, but getting around on race morning with road closures requires planning.
